During my 50 years of smithing, I've developed a lot of proprietary stains, finishes and treatments to return my client's original but cracked, rusted and well-worn guns back to new-old condition.
For this signed A.G. Gibbs rifle, I applied many of those same techniques to create a unique old-looking but new rifle that could tell you endless stories from its "150 years" of mountain hunting.
- With timeless craftsmanship, the surface textures are "worn" where you'd expect this rifle to be handled: the neck, forearm, and cheek piece all reflect replicated antiqued textures and finishes reinforcing the clean architectural lines one would expect from long-passed artisan gun builders.
- The few "dents" (post-finishing) were placed here and there as one would expect to find on a rifle that was excitedly dropped into the hooks above the fireplace after a successful hunt. All of the brass was mirror-polished, then "antiqued" to recreate the green patina that would naturally occur over hundreds of years.
- Wood and metal inletting on this gun fuse seamlessly. The factory trigger group has been disassembled, finely polished, and blued.
- After crowing, the barrel was sanded progressively to 800 grit, then fully polished to a mirror finish with jeweler's rouge before starting the weeks-long barrel browning process in my purpose-built browning chamber. After 1/2 dozen coats, carding, final burnishing and oiling, the barrel finish can tell its own stories of millennia past.
- The carvings extend continually from butt to nose cap reflecting the same incised, low relief and high relief scrollwork carving that I've been incorporating into my clients' $4,000 sporting rifle builds.
By incorporating micronized carbon, I duplicated the years of hand dirt and gun oil penetration into the stock, but leaving the "high wear" areas looking a little more polished from decades of use.
- I've even inlayed a small brass plate on the left lock area for you to personalize your gun.
- Finally, I finished this stock with 6 coats of hand-rubbed linseed oil, and left glossy.
- But I will deliver it with a satin, or even a more "distressed" finish at your request (no additional charge).
